Lineage Details

Recognizably obese when about four weeks old. In addition to obesity, hyperphagia, diabetic-like hyperglycemia, impaired glucose tolerance, hyperinsulinemia, subfertility, impaired wound healing, hypersecretion of pituitary and adrenal hormones, hypometabolism, and hypothermic hypothermia have been reported. Obesity is characterized by an increase in the number and size of Adipocytes. Overeating affects obesity, but excessive weight gain and excess fat deposition are observed even when food intake is restricted to Lean's weight maintenance level. Hyperinsulinemia does not develop until excessive weight gain, and it is believed that obesity results in the development of hyperinsulinemia. Even in very young, not yet obese mice, the threshold for stimulation of insulin secretion from the pancreatic islets of Langerhans has been reported to be abnormally low. Hyperglycemia is transient and declines at 14 to 16 weeks of age. *Low resistance to temperature changes and transport stress may cause animals to weaken and die.
